During his years in power Bismarck rarely granted interviews to reporters. When he did finally grant an interview to Henri de Blowitz at the Congress of Berlin, the statements he made to the Times (London) correspondent created an international sensation. Although this interview has been often cited by contemporaries and historians as evidence for certain fundamental aspects of Bismarck’s personality and statesmanship, this incident has not been subjected to a detailed scholarly analysis. A closer look at this episode confirms that it has a great deal to tell us about German foreign policy after 1871, and that its true significance has not been fully grasped by previous researchers.
