The urge to collect books is as old as the book as artifact. But book collecting has its own developmental history, progressing from a utilitarian activity pursued via unique manuscript items exclusively by the wealthy and highly educated to an imaginative exercise played out among ever-increasing numbers of printed multiples by a broad cross section of the literate public. It is a progression with important implications for the interconnected histories of the book and of private and public libraries.
