Abstract

Abstract Geophysical methods are increasingly being used to characterize the subsurface. They offer the potential to derive basic characteristics, state variables, and properties of geological formations. In this article, we focus on the application of geophysical methods to derive properties and state variables of aquifer systems. Special attention is given to the assessment of hydraulic conductivity, porosity, and water saturation. Three different groups of methods (seismics, electrical techniques, and electromagnetics) and their combined use are discussed. For each method, relationships between geophysical and hydrogeological quantities are outlined and applications are presented. A separate section is devoted to the development and application of combined approaches in hydrogeophysics.
