Abstract

We present the first measurement of \ensuremathΥ(4S) decays to \ensuremathπ+\ensuremathπ^\ensuremath-\ensuremathΥ(1S) and \ensuremathπ+\ensuremathπ^\ensuremath-\ensuremathΥ(2S) based on a sample of 230\ifmmode×\else\texttimes\fi106\ensuremathΥ(4S) mesons collected with the BABAR detector. We measure the product branching fractions B(\ensuremathΥ(4S)\ensuremath→\ensuremathπ+\ensuremathπ^\ensuremath-\ensuremathΥ(1S))\ifmmode×\else\texttimes\fiB(\ensuremathΥ(1S)\ensuremath→\ensuremathμ+\ensuremathμ^\ensuremath-)=(2.23\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi0.25stat\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi0.27syst)\ifmmode×\else\texttimes\fi10^\ensuremath-6 and B(\ensuremathΥ(4S)\ensuremath→\ensuremathπ+\ensuremathπ^\ensuremath-\ensuremathΥ(2S))\ifmmode×\else\texttimes\fiB(\ensuremathΥ(2S)\ensuremath→\ensuremathμ+\ensuremathμ^\ensuremath-)=(1.69\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi0.26stat\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi0.20syst)\ifmmode×\else\texttimes\fi10^\ensuremath-6, from which we derive the partial widths \ensuremathΓ(\ensuremathΥ(4S)\ensuremath→\ensuremathπ+\ensuremathπ^\ensuremath-\ensuremathΥ(1S))=(1.8\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi0.4) keV and \ensuremathΓ(\ensuremathΥ(4S)\ensuremath→\ensuremathπ+\ensuremathπ^\ensuremath-\ensuremathΥ(2S))=(2.7\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi0.8) keV.
