This article argues that the nurse’s uniform is a form of ethopoietic fashion. In doing so it sheds new light on the history of nursing uniforms whilst also introducing and illustrating key aspects of a theory of ethopoietic fashion. The article shows that efforts to design and embody nursing identity and character through dress are central to nursing history and practice.
