The high binding energy of the carbon-fluorine bond, as well as the high electronegativity of the fluorine atom, imparts special properties such as enhanced stability to organic fluorine compounds that make them medically useful. For example, recent work shows that brominated perfluorocarbons can serve as safe, nonirritating x-ray contrast agents. This result, as well as a report on attempts to prepare better fluorinated anesthetics, was described during a symposium on biochemistry involving carbon-fluorine bonds, held jointly by the Division of Biological Chemistry and the Division of Fluorine Chemistry. According to Dr. David M. Long, a member of the radiology department at the University of California, San Diego, interest in fluorocarbons as x-ray agents was stimulated by earlier work of Dr. Leland C. Clark of Children's Hospital Research Foundation in Cincinnati.
