Partner, not comrade: blackness, cross-racial coalition, and power in France

Abstract

Is allyship/co-conspiracy possible? How can we achieve struggle convergence? How to build a multiracial movement? Are among the questions haunting the social movement and its re-composition since 2005 in France and the multiplication of political organizations and collectives organized around race/racism. This article investigates how Black organizations in France are navigating the space of encounter with predominantly white leftist organizations. Using interviews conducted with white leftist organizers and Black organizers, I am showing how they crafted an alternative answer to the question, building upon specific ways of doing/being in the face of fraternalisme and anti-Blackness.
