Abstract A search for the very rare B*0→ μ +μ - <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mmultiscripts> <mml:mi>B</mml:mi> <mml:mrow/> <mml:mrow> <mml:mrow/> <mml:mo>∗</mml:mo> <mml:mn>0</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:mmultiscripts> <mml:mo>→</mml:mo> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>μ</mml:mi> <mml:mo>+</mml:mo> </mml:msup> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>μ</mml:mi> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo> </mml:msup> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> and Bs*0→ μ +μ - <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mmultiscripts> <mml:mi>B</mml:mi> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>s</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> <mml:mrow> <mml:mrow/> <mml:mo>∗</mml:mo> <mml:mn>0</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:mmultiscripts> <mml:mo>→</mml:mo> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>μ</mml:mi> <mml:mo>+</mml:mo> </mml:msup> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>μ</mml:mi> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo> </mml:msup> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> decays is conducted by analysing the Bc+→ π +μ +μ - <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:msubsup> <mml:mi>B</mml:mi> <mml:mi>c</mml:mi> <mml:mo>+</mml:mo> </mml:msubsup> <mml:mo>→</mml:mo> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>π</mml:mi> <mml:mo>+</mml:mo> </mml:msup> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>μ</mml:mi> <mml:mo>+</mml:mo> </mml:msup> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>μ</mml:mi> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo> </mml:msup> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> process. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 \text fb-1 <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msup> <mml:mtext> fb</mml:mtext> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:msup> </mml:math> . The signal signatures correspond to simultaneous peaks in the μ +μ - <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>μ</mml:mi> <mml:mo>+</mml:mo> </mml:msup> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>μ</mml:mi> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo> </mml:msup> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> and π +μ +μ - <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>π</mml:mi> <mml:mo>+</mml:mo> </mml:msup> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>μ</mml:mi> <mml:mo>+</mml:mo> </mml:msup> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>μ</mml:mi> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo> </mml:msup> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> invariant masses. No evidence for an excess of events over background is observed for either signal decay mode. Upper limits at the 90% <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mn>90</mml:mn> <mml:mo>%</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> confidence level are set on the branching fractions relative to that for Bc+→ J\hspace-1.66656pt/\hspace-1.111ptψ π + <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:msubsup> <mml:mi>B</mml:mi> <mml:mi>c</mml:mi> <mml:mo>+</mml:mo> </mml:msubsup> <mml:mo>→</mml:mo> <mml:mi>J</mml:mi> <mml:mspace/> <mml:mo>/</mml:mo> <mml:mspace/> <mml:mi>ψ</mml:mi> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>π</mml:mi> <mml:mo>+</mml:mo> </mml:msup> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> decays, \beginaligned R_B*0+μ -+/J\hspace-1.66656pt/\hspace-1.111ptψ π +amp;lt; 3.8× 10-5 \text and
