Abstract

Abstract This chapter presents an overview of the variety of Portuguese spoken in East Timor. After a brief introduction about the current status of the language and its speakers, a description and analysis of certain linguistic variables are provided, including traits related to phonetics, phonology, morphosyntax, lexicon, and semantics. In addition, the chapter claims that the Portuguese spoken in East Timor (ETP) can be classified as a non-dominant variety in the initial stages of development, which may stabilize to become a national variety of Portuguese, coexisting with Standard European Portuguese (SEP). The chapter concludes with suggestions of areas for future research.
