Abstract

🇬🇧 Description (English) This document serves as the official entry point to the CRTI (Compression–Response Transition Index) framework. Its purpose is to make a single observation about complex systems accessible: many systems do not primarily fail through instability alone, but through a loss of effective degrees of freedom. CRTI formalizes this idea as a dimensionless quantityT(t) = R(t) / Φ(t),where Φ(t) represents the effective number of active degrees of freedom (derived from the spectral entropy of the covariance matrix), and R(t) is a proxy for the dynamical recovery rate. The framework complements classical Early Warning Signals (e.g., Critical Slowing Down) by introducing a structural dimension: instead of assuming fixed system dimensionality, CRTI explicitly captures structural compression preceding a critical transition. This document is intentionally designed as a “Reader Orientation”: a minimal and accessible presentation covering the problem, the core equation, interpretation, scope, and limitations. The framework is primarily applicable to fold-type transitions in multivariate systems under approximate stationarity. CRTI is not a universal indicator, but a targeted tool for systems in which structural and dynamical changes jointly shape the approach to a transition. 🔑 Keywords (Deutsch) Komplexe Systeme Frühwarnsignale Kritische Übergänge Strukturelle Kompression Spektrale Entropie Effektiver Rang Multivariate Analyse Kovarianzmatrix Dynamische Systeme Kipppunkte Systemstabilität Informationsdynamik 🔑 Keywords (English) complex systems early warning signals critical transitions structural compression spectral entropy effective rank multivariate systems covariance matrix dynamical systems tipping points system stability information dynamics
