Abstract

We describe the development, delivery, and results from our novel required mathematics course in a large undergraduate business program. In the course, called Mathematical Analysis in Business, students use mathematics the way they will in the workplace: they work with data in spreadsheets on business-relevant applications. This applied orientation lets students experience mathematics as a tool for solving problems, guiding decisions, and developing insights. Applications in the course include currency exchange, stock growth, income taxes, and entrepreneurial fundraising. We launched the course in 2014, and as of this writing, it has served over 18,000 students.
