Abstract

The Higgs boson (H) decay width is determined from the ratio of off- and on-shell production of <a:math xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"> <a:mi>H</a:mi> <a:mo stretchy="false">→</a:mo> <a:mi>W</a:mi> <a:mi>W</a:mi> <a:mo stretchy="false">→</a:mo> <a:mi>e</a:mi> <a:mi>ν</a:mi> <a:mi>μ</a:mi> <a:mi>ν</a:mi> </a:math> using proton–proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of <e:math xmlns:e="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"> <e:mn>138</e:mn> <e:mtext> </e:mtext> <e:mtext> </e:mtext> <e:msup> <e:mi>fb</e:mi> <e:mrow> <e:mo>−</e:mo> <e:mn>1</e:mn> </e:mrow> </e:msup> </e:math> collected at <g:math xmlns:g="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"> <g:msqrt> <g:mi>s</g:mi> </g:msqrt> <g:mo>=</g:mo> <g:mn>13</g:mn> <g:mtext> </g:mtext> <g:mtext> </g:mtext> <g:mi>TeV</g:mi> </g:math> by the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The Higgs boson total decay width is <k:math xmlns:k="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"> <k:msub> <k:mi mathvariant="normal">Γ</k:mi> <k:mi>H</k:mi> </k:msub> <k:mo>=</k:mo> <k:msubsup> <k:mn>3.9</k:mn> <k:mrow> <k:mo>−</k:mo> <k:mn>2.2</k:mn> </k:mrow> <k:mrow> <k:mo>+</k:mo> <k:mn>2.7</k:mn> </k:mrow> </k:msubsup> <k:mtext> </k:mtext> <k:mtext> </k:mtext> <k:mi>MeV</k:mi> </k:math> , in agreement with the standard model prediction. The uncertainty in this result represents a factor of 3 improvement over the previous CMS result in this decay channel.
