Launched in 2021 by the municipalities of Odivelas, the innovative halal public policy has implemented halal diets in the public-school network of the municipality of Odivelas and Amadora, allowing access to more than 250 Muslim students. Through commensality, socialization and inter-cultural dialogue have been encouraged between Muslim and non-Muslim students, mitigating, in the process, existing cultural differences and creating spaces for religious freedom. Going beyond the school sphere, the initiative has impacted the daily lives of the targeted Muslim population, transforming and altering the social relations established between her and government institutions. Applying an Anthropology of Food, a dimension little explored in Portugal, combined with Public Anthropology, the aim was to shed light on the impacts that public policy has had on it in order to understand his potential.
