Abstract

The study of writing equipment gained a recent development due to the identification of artefacts connected to writing practice including the two complementary methods, using wax and ink during the Antiquity. The presence of these items in archaeological digs, the analysis of their occurrence and of their evolution can give indications on the diffusion of literacy in provinces. Funerary sites where writing instruments often are the only evidence of writings which didn't survive (on tablets, papyri or parchment) strongly assist this research. Translation : Isabelle Fauduet
