Accounting for 24% of the national carbon footprint, the agriculture and agri-food sector is characterized by emissions mainly of methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and, to a lesser extent, carbon dioxide (CO2). The National Low Carbon Strategy (SNBC) aims to cut down the sector's emissions by 46% by 2050. Two decarbonization strategies are possible. Maintaining agricultural production using agronomic, zootechnical and technological levers. Some of these levers are still immature and could not be sufficient to achieve the target of 46%. The second strategy is based on integrated scenarios aiming the SBNC objectives and working with breakthrough assumptions and a sharp decline in the ruminant livestock. According to the current state of biomass resources availability, it will be very difficult to meet all the challenges identified: decarbonization, maintaining livestock farming, significant energy production, a massive export policy and food self-sufficiency while respecting a genuine agro-ecology.
