Abstract

Crop-livestock integration appears to be a promising way for sustainable development of agriculture, as an alternative to the specialization trends. We present in this article a participatory process of diagnosis and design of integrated crop-livestock systems on the territory of Aveyron river watershed. This territory is diversified with more or less specialized field-crop and livestock systems. Three participatory workshops have been organized with local stakeholders (farmers, natural resources managers, collect and storage organisms, technical advisors) to build a diagnosis of crop-livestock integration challenges and identify promising options of change. These ideas have been articulated into a scenario called “territorial integration”, compared to a “specialization trend” scenario using a multicriteria assessment grid. This work contributes to the reflections on the development of more self-sufficient production systems at the territory level, valorizing local resources and local knowledge. It thus contributes to initiate agroecological transition through the development of more integrated and more autonomous production systems. This article presents the first results of our study and the perspectives for research.
