Abstract

The POEETE project aimed to revisit the interest of maintaining or integrating livestock and crops in farms and territories. We tried to bring an integrated and systemic vision of these mixed farming-livestock systems (MFS) to apprehend their contributions to the agro-ecological transition, by mobilising comparisons with specialised farms if necessary. We related the perception of the sustainability of MFS systems with their anchoring in modernity (in the sociological sense). We have identified the obstacles and motivations for adopting or maintaining systems that promote synergies between crops and livestock at the farm or territorial level. We have provided technical and agronomic references adapted to the Bourgogne Franche-Comté and Rhône-Alpes regions on new practices strengthening the food autonomy of livestock farms via the use of soybean meal substitutes and the development of new legumes in multispecies grasslands. Finally, we modelled the functioning of farms to explore new practices of exchange between specialised farms or more autonomous management enhancing crop-livestock interactions to increase their sustainability.
