The consumption of high-calorie diets is linked to the development of obesity, by promoting the alteration of mechanisms involving lipid and oxidative metabolism, and consequently the risk of cardiovascular diseases. As a source of bioactive products with therapeutic properties, algae are currently attracting renewed interest from scientists due to their preventive use. In the present study, 28 Wistar rats were fed a standard diet for 1 week (stabilization period) and randomly divided into 4 groups: SD (standard diet), CD (cafeteria diet), CDGc (cafeteria diet substituted by Gelidium corneum) and CDSp (cafeteria diet substituted by Spirulina platensis) for 6 weeks (intervention period). Daily monitoring of body weight gain, abdominal size and rat symptoms was carried out throughout the experiment. Lipid profile and glucose were measured by enzymatic methods. Our results show that the hypercaloric diet (cafeteria) promoted obesity in rats by disrupting their lipid and glycemic profiles in the 3 cafeteria diet groups compared with the standard diet. We also noted a significant increase in HDL-C and a decrease in total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL-C in the CDGc and CDSp groups compared with the CD group. Thus, dietary supplementation with G. corneum or S. platensis could be a promising alternative in the prevention of cardiovascular risk and/or obesity aggravation.
