Evaluation of Garcinia species extracts for enhanced skin protection

Abstract

The assessment of Garcinia extracts reveals considerable potential owing to their antioxidant, antimicrobial, and ultraviolet protective attributes, in conjunction with their Sun Protection Factor (SPF). The amalgamation of these natural compounds may enhance dermal health and confer protection against ultraviolet-induced damage. This research endeavors to examine the effects of extracts derived from Garcinia mangostana, Garcinia indica, and Garcinia cambogia when incorporated into a chitosan (C) and flaxseed emulsion for the purpose of cutaneous protection. The antioxidant efficacy of these extracts, alongside variations in the chitosan and flaxseed emulsion (C, C+F, E1, E2, E3), was evaluated utilizing standardized antioxidant assays and both enzymatic and non-enzymatic methodologies. The findings illustrated that elevated concentrations of the extracts resulted in an augmented inhibition activity, thereby affirming their potency as free radical scavengers. The chitosan and flaxseed emulsion infused with these extracts exhibited pronounced resistance against acne-inducing bacteria such as Staphylococcus hominis, Staphylococcus auricularis, Staphylococcus arlettae, and various strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae. As a result, facial masks infused with these extracts may function as a protective barrier against excessive ultraviolet exposure. The SPF of formulations containing 5% and 10% cream was quantified utilizing the Mansur equation method and absorption spectroscopy within the wavelength range of 290 nm to 320 nm. All extracts were determined to enhance the SPF, thus providing efficacious protection against ultraviolet radiation.
