MAIN ADVISIOR: LUCY FELEKE (PhD) ABSTRACT contractors performance is the most required issue in the construction industry. In many cases, contractors are blamed for poor performance in the Ethiopian construction industry. Whilst there are many factors that affect the performance of Western Oromia contractors. Hence, the study aims to investigate factors influencing the performance of contractors on road construction projects in the case of Western Oromia . To achieve the objective of the study mixed research approach along with descriptive case study employed. Moreover, cross sectional research design applied. In order to collect primary data, questionnaires and semi structured interviews used. Using snowball-sampling technique, 50 populations identified as sample frame and all of them were purposively selected as sample respondents’ in order to have a better representative. Data analyzed using Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 22 used in order to rank the factors that affect contractors performance, key performance indicators, and remedial measures, which improves contractors performance problems in road construction projects in the study area. The data was presented with the use of tables, graphs, and verbal explanations. The study found, the major factors adversely affecting the contractors performance of road projects in the case of study area were: continuous increments of construction material costs, delays in interim payments and settlements of claims for variations, fluctuations, loss and expense due to owners problems, poor project planning and control, contractors poor site management and supervision, proper coordination among stake holders; cost of compliance to regulatory requirements, problems with adjacent community, Training the human resource in the skills demanded by the project, political environment. Moreover, the main key performance indicators were escalation of material prices, work environmental condition in and out of site like politics, organizational structure, Inadequate design and unavailability of resources as planned through the project duration. The study additionally found, the ways to improve performance were using of ensure update technology utilization, use suitable construction method to suit specific project, Designer allocate of adequate project duration , make use of effective project management techniques , minimize dispute between all parties especially government and community onside of politics and contractors use skilled man power on technical work. In order to resolve the aforementioned problems, the study recommends: develop and approach for the calculation of price escalation; Road construction firms need to have a reliable working capital base and should only be awarded contracts based on their financial capabilities and technical resources at their disposal; Payment waiting time of contractors from owner’s side; flexible organizational structure and Regular meetings and discussions between consultants and contractors keywords: contractors , Factors, , Influence, Performance and performance of constructors
