Abstract

Numerous epidemiological studies suggest a link between occupational exposure to pesticides and the occurrence of acute or chronic health effects. Among these health outcomes, the occurrence of neurological disorders such as neurobehavioral effects (memory, attention disturbances...) has become a public health concern. Since 1997, the PHYTONER cohort follows the neurological health of 927 vineworkers in Gironde. It studies the relationship between the neurological disturbances and the occupational exposure of workers to pesticides. In this project specific efforts were developed for estimating pesticide exposure. Exposure parameters were assessed with the help of a crop-exposure matrix (PESTIMAT) and algorithms calculated from field studies (PESTEXPO). The application of these tools, based on probabilities, frequencies and intensities of exposure, helped to better characterize the risk of neurobehavioral disorders among subjects occupationally exposed to pesticides in the cohort PHYTONER. It also opens perspectives in the context of other epidemiological studies.
