Abstract

This study investigates the effect of row spacing, variety and nitrogen on the yield characters and bulb yield of onion in Dadinkowa, Gombe state Nigeria during the 2022 and 2023 rainy seasons. This was aimed to identify the most suitable row spacing, nitrogen application rate, and best performing variety for improved productivity of Onion. Treatments consisted of three row spacing (30 x 10cm, 30 x 15 cm and 30 x 20 cm), two onion varieties (`Yar rumi and Zobo) and four nitrogen levels (0, 80, 100 and 120 kg/ha). These were laid in a split-split plot design with three replications. The results of the study showed that row spacing had no significant effect on bulb diameter and dry weight in both trials. Though, bulb fresh weight was higher at 30 x 20 cm in the 2022 trial. Yield per plot and per hectare were significantly influenced by row spacing in the 2023 trial, with 30 x 20 cm producing the highest values. Varietal performance indicated that Zobo outperform\med `Yar rumi in bulb fresh weight during the 2022 trial. Nitrogen application significantly affected yield components, with 100kg/ha consistently recording highest attributes. In the 2023 trial, 100kg/ha produced the highest yield (10,639kg/ha). Based on these findings, a row spacing of 30 x 20 cm and 100 kg N/ha are recommended for onion production in the study area for improved production.
