ADVISOR: EBISA DABA (PhD) ABSTRACT The main objective of this study was toexamine student’s English language speaking anxiety with particular reference to grade 9 at Dalo secondary school, East Wollega Zone Oromia region. For this purpose 80 grade 9 students were randomly selected from Dalo secondary school. Furthermore, 4 EFL teachers were included in the study by using comprehensive sampling. A descriptive research design which consisted of first collecting quantitative data and then collecting qualitative was used to investigate the level of learners towards the students’ English language speaking anxiety. That is, both quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques were employed to analyze the data collected. Three main measurement tools such as class room observation, interview and questionnaire were used in this study. The quantitative data was analyzed using frequency count and percentage. The qualitative data was thematically analyzed. Attempts were made to triangulate the qualitative and quantitative data. Thus, the results of the study showed that most of the students were found to be anxious. The study further showed that anxiety factor was indicated as the problem of English language speaking anxiety on students’ speaking practices. The study also investigated that debilitative anxiety plays its role on English language learning of the subjects of the study. Finally it was found that most of the students experienced language learning anxiety, especially of communication apprehension and fear of negative evaluation. So, anxiety was a debilitative in language learning, especially anxiety of speaking in English classes. The findings of this study depicted that anxiety is prevalent among the subjects of the study and had negative effect on English language speaking classes. Finally, in this study recommendations were made aimed at reducing classroom English language speaking learning anxiety.
