There is considerable uncertainty surrounding the state of sanitary threats to crop production in real time. According to the ratio between the direct costs of pesticide treatments to those associated with yield losses, a risk minimization strategy may include treatments that are unnecessary, but not known as such at the time of the decision, leading to health and environmental damage. How can we determine the real proportion of these unnecessary treatments, and support the direct economic risk of eliminating them? This article, devoted to French wine production, known for its high per-unit-area use of fungicides, describes the testing of an insurable treatment protocol that has enabled a 30-55% reduction in fungicides between 2019 and 2022, combined with an incentive system for the payment of compensation in the event of losses, complementing the current system for covering climatic risks.
