Observatories for environmental research were progressively structured since ten years successfully in France. INRA had strongly contributed, giving permanent funding and human resources to observatories. The example of two research observatories, one hydrological, the other hydrobiological, aims to show the specificity of these observatories but also their complementarities, both in terms of scope of study, variables and scales. They are also complementary in terms of partnerships with stakeholders and territorial managers, which are different in the two cases. Work has to be done to foster the convergence between observatories in terms of observation, modelling, experimentation, and finally appropriation, mobilizing researchers, stakeholders, but also farmers.
