Abstract

Research indicates that stress has a profound effect on the physiological and psychological state of police officers, which can influence their performance and decision-making abilities. Heart rate is a key measure in assessing stress in police work, as it reveals the body’s readiness to respond in critical situations. High stress levels lead to physiological responses, such as elevated heart rate and blood pressure, which prepare officers for rapid action but may also impair cognitive and physical adaptability. Physical fitness plays a crucial role in police work, not only aiding in stress management but also boosting self-esteem and mental health, which are essential for focus and operational effectiveness in high-stress situations. Poor physical fitness may increase officers’ susceptibility to stress and limit their response efficiency. A study involving police cadets in a simulated environment found that their heart rates could reach levels where cognitive and physical performance decline. This emphasises the need to enhance stress tolerance and fitness, which would enable future officers to handle complex stressors effectively. Training that incorporates realistic stress-inducing scenarios is essential, as it helps cadets develop strategies for managing stress, which are vital for effective and safe performance in real-life situations.

Keywords: heart rate; physical fitness; anticipation; stress
