Abstract

The analysis of random vibrations of buildings, caused by winds, has been used to estimate the damping characteristics of these buildings. As the true values of the damping were not known, there was no check on the accuracy of validity of the methods used. An analogue computer simulation of the random vibrations of a theoretical five-storey building was therefore carried out to investigate these matters. In both the field and experimental work viscous damping was assumed. So far, practical measurements have supported this assumption.
