Abstract

Major Advisor: Dr. Gebrechristos Nuriye (Assoc. Prof.) ABSTRACT This study is devoted to investigate causes and effects of squatter settlement in Nekemite Town as the case study. The study used multiple research methods namely descriptive, correlational and explanatory research design. Therefore, study employed a descriptive research design to examine the character of squatter settlement; the cause and effects of squatting in Nekemte Town. Also, this study used correlational research design so as to analyse the relationship between the cause and effects of squatting. The explanatory research design was employed to examine the degree to which effect squatting predict squatter settlement in Nekemte town. The finding shows that squatting characterized low quality built materials made up from mud, wood, and plastics. The residents occupied spontaneously without having lawful grant in place of vacant public land, slant slope, marshy lands, river sides, dumpsites, at marginal of forest and degraded land prone to flood during rainy period. Squatter settlements characterized lacked basic services such as access to safe water, paved walkways, green belt, drains, and sanitation. The educational centres; health service, telecom and financial service were less accessible. Squatters were exposed to unfair earnings, unemployment; and faced financial discrimination to capitalize own land and housing assets to access finance. Thus the cause of squatting associated with deficit residential; high housing costs, presence of opportunities from family or friends, speculation of future development, the institutional and legal failure of governance, emergence of development projects in Nekemte town. The result regarding squatter settlements effects in Nekemte town is segregation from social services, lack of basic social services, safety and security, health challenges, live in fear of eviction, poor sanitation and lack of investment. On the basis of the findings the study recommended the government needs to assist poor people in improving and updated their homes. The municipality needs to discuss with squatters how land invasions and settlements defended and upgrading a process through which informal areas are gradually improved, formalized, and incorporated into the city itself by the authorities of the town. Policies should rehabilitate existing settlements and provide land and services to incoming migrants. Keywords: Characteristics, Causes, Effects, Squatter Settlement
