Large cities settled in agricultural plains, such as Paris, extended on the fertile soils available nearby. It is still the case today. The soil consumption, is unavoidable, but could be done on a much more limited scale if urban sprawl was organised in territory projects taking into account the specificities of spatial organisation of agricultural areas. In the same time, a better valorisation of landscape value of the open spaces where grain crops are produced would positively contribute to densification of urban borders which could replace the house scattering which predominates today. This new conception of the contact between town and agriculture needs competencies of both urbanists and agronomists. It requires the construction of a new corpus of interdisciplinary competencies, which we propose to name ‘agriurbanist’. The CERAPT (Group for teaching and research in agriurbanism and territory projects), born from a common work of Landscape school (ENSP, Versailles), school of architecture (ENSAV) and a school of agronomy (AgroParisTech) sets a new course for this new group of professionals.
