Abstract

Abstract: This research work was an evaluation of the textbook FAR AHEAD Terminale (FA Tle) under the perspective of the pragmatic competence, a language user’s competence in meaning decoding and encoding in context. It aimed to discover to what extent the textbook under study helps learners develop that very competence. With the help of a set of evaluation criteria, the content of the eight (08) units of the material is analyzed and the results show that one aspect of the pragmatic competence is abundantly present in the coursebook: pragmalinguistics (including functional competence and discourse competence). The other major part, sociopragmatics (including illocutionary competence and sociocultural competence) occur in a rather sporadic way. This is a real weakness in the development of students’ pragmatic competence, for language is learnt to socialize and better interact in the society. Then, as suggestion for a future version of FA Tle, the authors (and textbook designers) should include in each unit special sessions and rubrics dealing with illocutionary and sociocultural competences.  Keywords: competence, pragmatic competence, textbook, Far Ahead Terminale.
