The Open Library concept combines technology with flexible access and has been adopted worldwide. In addition to traditional media lending, libraries are frequently used as spaces for learning and social interaction. Studies confirm the high level of acceptance of this model, which makes library use more efficient and user-friendly. This article explores the term Open Library, examines the typology of such libraries, and highlights both the societal impact and the changing patterns of library usage. It specifically focuses on the University Library Mainz, where the concept is being introduced at three locations: the Medical Library (BB UM), the Musicology Library, and the Library for Mathematics, Computer Science, Natural Sciences, and Technology (BB MINT). The BB UM and the BB MINT are currently in the implementation phase, with the main goal providing access beyond the regular staffed service hours. This requires technical and organizational measures such as an electronic access system, video surveillance, and emergency infrastructure. The present article describes the implementation using the example of the BB UM.
