Abstract

The sylvopastoralisme is a mode of sustainable management which reconciles forest and pastoral objectives. This livestock management, mainly located in the Southern France, is to graze animals in the forest, to take advantage of forage resources located under the trees. At the same time, these thinnings contribute to the development of the trees and allow production of wood. However, difficulties remained to implement pastureland practices such as organisation difficulties, ignorance or lack of skillsin grazing management, difficulties of pastoral or forest management or even marketing of forest products. An important part of woodlands in the South is, therefore, to date little or poorly valued. But solutions exist, both in public or private forests. In this context, a research programme was implemented to identify of the conditions of feasibility and implementation of practices with combined value (forestry and pastoral) of forested areas. The paper presents the achievements of this project and particularlytools, methods and references, necessary supports for the implementation of pastureland practices.
