The progress made in Canada in the field of fire safety in buildings, combined with developments in the field of architecture, design and construction methods, made it necessary to develop facilities in which fires and their effects could be studied in controlled real conditions with respect to size, configuration and amount of fuel. Such facilities have been constructed. They comprise a shelter designed for full-scale fire experiments and an experimental ten-story tower for studying various methods of smoke removal in high buildings. This paper describes the buildings and their equipment, the operating procedure and the experimental research program, and outlines the methods of evaluating the effects on the environment.
