This article is a meta study comparing the results of eleven sociolinguistic surveys (Bachelor and Master theses in the framework of the DFG project »The Urban Vernacular of Hanover«) dealing with Northern German towns and cities. The focus lies on four linguistic variables (fricativation of g, with plosive in the offset, short vowel instead of standard German long vowel, raising of [e:] to M), which are analysed in terms of their standard or non-standard variants. The statistic modelling of the entire data set reveals processes of linguistic change for all of the variables. Besides, differences in space (mainly between Northern Ostfalia and Eastern Westfalia), between the experimental settings (picture naming, test with blanks, reading task) and tendencies concerning the educational background of the speakers appear. The article shows how profitable the involvement of towns and cities in data acquisition is for questions about regional varieties.
