In a context of change in dairy farming, the ORGUE project studied the organisation and evaluated the working conditions of large dairy farms. Surveys of around fifty farms showed the existence of a diversity of collectives, organisation methods and working conditions. The specific characteristics of each of the three types of working groups identified appear in terms of working conditions as in terms of levers to achieve a satisfactory quality of life for farmers. A targeted survey of farms that have given up dairy production illustrates the challenge of centrally integrating the human factor into a shared strategy in order to succeed in renewing the working group and thus perpetuate the structure. Focus groups of farmers, advisors and teacher trainers enabled us to gather their views on large dairy herds and their needs for references, tools, advice and training in relation to the changes taking place in the dairy sector and their professions. In response, the Orgue’s partners have developed and tested a modular approach to support livestock farmers wishing to integrate the work into their project studies as well as pedagogical approaches to make agricultural students aware of the approach to work.
