The utility of the normalized heat load in comparing the performance of a given construction in real-world and test fires is examined. It is shown that the concept is valid regardless of the dimensions and geometry of the construction, and argued that the errors arising from the non-ideal behaviour of building materials at elevated temperatures are likely to cancel out in a comparison.
