In France and around the world, urban farming projects are rising and are using a high degree of technicality and innovation. While some of them integrate vertical or multi-storey cultivation systems, in greenhouses or containers, others use the circular economy and waste recycling. However, as these initiatives encounter technical, social and health problems, the TechnAU research project offers some answers. Three research axes have been developed: (i) on the plants adaptation to limited light conditions in an urban environment, especially shady conditions; (ii) on crop fertilization and substrate based on urban wastes (deconstruction of buildings and urban bio-waste) which have shown their agronomic and sanitary potential, and finally (iii) on social perceptions about urban farming products based on wastes and about decision makers’ perception of high-tech urban farms in two cities, Paris and Toulouse.
