From 1943 to 2008, the French plant health protection agency (SRPV) produced documents intended to inform farmers of the biotic constraints in their crops. This study showed it was worthwhile to collect these pest warnings documents, national annual assessments of the SRPV and certain documents from agricultural technical institutes, because they will allow to constitute long documentary series. The documentary corpuses constituted would be made accessible to the users with tools allowing to search and to extract contained information. Examples of studies using this information were identified. The study also showed the interest of connecting these observations on biotic constraints with related data (climate, soil, agricultural practices…) to better exploit the information and propose their collection in the current epidemiological surveillance schemes. This study showed that the development of a documentary database on pest dynamics in commercial fields using historical documents was feasible, and that this database would provide new knowledge useful for sustainable management of crop health.
