Background: Oncological rehabilitation in Germany is well established over the last two decades, but potential predictive factors for a positive rehabilitation success, lifestyle changes or return to work are still under investigations. Methods: 316 breast cancer patients (mean age 47.5 y) were evaluated by standardized questionnaire at T1 (start of inpatient rehabilitation), T2 (after 3 weeks/end of inpatient rehabilitation) and T3 (six months after inpatient rehabilitation) including IRES-24 and HADS questionnaire during in-patient rehabilitation. Results: As significant predictors for a successful return to work a positive occupational forecast, social assistance, stress at workplace and the duration of the in-door rehabilitation were detected. Using these predictors a variance clarification up to 30.8% and a prediction for return to work in 76.8% were possible. A lower grade of depression, job satisfaction and higher value in FKV scale “religiousness” correlated with better life satisfaction or QoL. For the total score of IRES- and HADS questionnaire a variance clarification up to 33.9% and 31.4% was possible. Conclusions: A successful return to work in breast cancer patients depends more on attributes of workplace and subjective conviction rather than direct cancer- or disease-related variables. Our data may help to establish a screening system for cancer patients with potential difficult return to work during oncological rehabilitation.
