Abstract

Methods for the evaluation of the components of honeybee colony structure are needed for the development of applied field researches and in order to approach with large survey the evolution of honey bee activity over time. A method has been developed, tested and improved on apiaries observatory on lavender honey flow (Apimodel ; Kretzschmar et Maisonnasse 2014). ColEval is based on the evaluation of area surface percentage occupied by the different components of the colony structure: honeybees, open and capped brood, honey-nectar and pollen. ColEval improves existing methods as it implies a reference image bank as well as a learning and training procedure. The use of this procedure paves the way to statistical error evaluation. ColEval allows to compare, a posteriori, the under- or over-evaluating by different observers working on the same project, which makes possible to eliminate bias in the measurements.
