Abstract

This study investigated the determinants of higher institution response to the adoption of the remote teaching-learning platform during the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria. The cross-sectional study was conducted using population of all academic staff of universities in the South-West Nigeria. One hundred and sixty-eight (168) academic staff responded to questionnaires across the states in the South-West, Nigeria using “Google form” which was validated (Cronbach Alpha r=0.70). The data collected were analyzed using path analytical approach of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The result revealed Chi-Square goodness of fit χ2 (19) = 37.649, p<0.05, and Goodness of Fit Index (GFI) of 0.80, Normed Fit Index (NFI) of 0.75, and Comparative Fit Index (CFI) of 0.85 was also established. Moreover, 100% of the causal effects in the model were direct, while there was no indirect effect. Location and ownership of the institution and its perceived usefulness determined the adoption of online platforms respectively. Among the recommendations was that higher institutions in Nigeria irrespective of their ownership (public or private) should confront the teaching-learning challenges brought by COVID-19 pandemic and embrace “new normal” in running higher education programmes post-COVID-19 pandemic era.
