Abstract

Summary Cladistic classifications seek to recognize monophyletic groups while changing the existing nomenclature as little as possible. When applied to the discussion of generic concepts this approach means that new descriptions and combinations are justifiable only when they are necessary for the delimitation of natural groups of species (monophyletic groups, sensu Hennig).
