Abstract: A lot of studies have concentrated on the usage of address and reference phrases in a variety of social contexts. The current investigation adds to this body of work by analyzing the usage of address terms in classroom interactions. The research site is at the University Alassane OUATTARA (UAO), Cote d’Ivoire. Using observation as method for collecting data, this paper analyzes address terms used by students and teachers in classroom situations. For the analysis, sixteen classes (lectures and tutorials) at the department of English were observed. According to the study, students generally address their teachers in class employing academic title only, academic title + last name, general title, and general title + last name. Inversely, when addressing students, teachers typically employ pronouns, first names, last names and general title. The investigation shows that the T/V distinction suggested by Brown and Gilman (1960) exists in Ivorian classroom interactions.
