The fire resistance of reinforced concrete columns is determined by calculation as a function of size, loading eccentricity, buckling length, percentage of reinforcement, and cover and design safety factor. Calculated fire resistances compare favourably but somewhat conservatively with actual fire test results. Simple design rules for fire resistance in terms of size, cover and type of aggregate are given.
