Fifty species of ants representing 6 subfamilies were present in Florida soybean fields. An attempt was made to determine both the niche and importance of individual species. A somewhat less diverse ant fauna was found in areas heavily infested by Solenopsis invicta Buren; this species itself was an important predator. In addition to S. invicta, S. geminata (Fabricius), S. pergandei Forel, Pheidole dentata Mayr, P. metallescens Emery, P. morrisi Forel, Iridomyrmex pruinosus (Roger), Conomyrma pyramicus (Roger) (black form), Nylanderia sp., Paratrechina longicornis (Latreille), and Lasius neoniger Emery were observed to prey extensively on pest insects.
