SYNOPSIS. Regeneration of walking legs in the fiddler crab Uca pugilator is most efficient when it follows autotomy (the reflexive loss of a limb). Closure of the wound and would healing occur immediately following autotomy and visible regeneration begins within a few days. Regeneration of the walking leg occurs in two distinct stages: The first stage, called Basal Growth, involves mitosis and differentiation. The second stage involves primarily protein synthesis and water uptake and is called Proecdysial Growth. Proecdysial Growth is, in part, under direct hormonal stimulation.
