Introduction:Diabetesmellitusisthemostfrequentpediatricendocrinopathy. Itisanautoimmunedisease that is readily associated with other autoimmune diseases. The prevalence of these associations and their impactonthebalanceandevolutionofdiabetesarenotwellknown. Weaimedtotstudytheepidemiological, clinicalandevolutionaryfeaturesofchildrenwithType1diabetesassociatedwithotherautoimmunedisease. Methods : This was a retrospective descriptive and analytical study of a sample of children with diabetes recruited during a 12-years period from 01/01/01 2003 until 31/12/2014. We compared 2 groups: AID+: including children in whom diabetes was associated withother autoimmune disease and AID- including children with only diabetes. Results:Wecollected308diabeticchildren,which mean an average hospital incidence of25. 6 cases / year. The prevalence ofthe association ofdiabetes with another autoimmune disease was of 11. 4% (N=35). Themostprevalentassociationwaswithceliac disease ,psoriasis (N=2),multiplesclerosis(N=1)andautoimmunehepa- titis(N=1). Besidestoahigherfrequencyofdiabetes infirst-degreerelatives(p=0. 03),AID+groupshowed ahigherfrequencyoffamilyhistoryofAID(p=0. 014). Noclinicaldifferenceswereobserved. Thefrequency of acute complications was similar in the 2 groups. Regarding late complications of diabetes, “AID+” groupshowedhigherfrequencyintheoccurrenceof diabetic neuropathy (18. 2% vs 5. 4%, p=0. 028). The meanfrequencyofhospitalizationswasalsohigherin the“AID+”group. Conclusion : The association of diabetes mellitus with other autoimmune diseases is frequent and often asymptomatic, which implies special atten- tionintermsofscreeningandmanagement.
