Abstract The Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) requires U.S. companies to reveal the amounts of toxics they release each year. Although TRI has been given credit for a 46 percent reduction in toxic releases over 11 years, a closer analysis of the TRI data suggests a more complicated story.
