ABSTRACT This paper raises concerns about English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers" perceptions, practice and challenges of task-based language teaching (TBLT) in teaching speaking. The study was conducted with the objective of identifying teachers" perception of TBLT in teaching speaking, their practical implementation of TBLT and the challenges they face in their actual classroom. The researcher in this study used descriptive research design. Accordingly, 24 teachers were used as sample of this study and, non-probability sampling was employed. Particularly, the available teachers in the selected schools were taken as a sample by employing the purposive sampling technique. So as to analyze the data, a mixed research method (quantitative and qualitative) were in use. In order to collect the data for this study, questionnaire, classroom observation and interview were used. The response from the questionnaire were analyzed quantitatively by using frequency, percentage and mean, and the data collected through classroom observation and interview were analyzed qualitatively. From the data which were collected through the questionnaires and interview, the findings indicate that most of EFL teachers have a good perceptions on TBLT particularly in teaching speaking and practice it well. However, there exist constraints like the large-sized class and difficulty in evaluating students" task-based performance, shortage of time to practice in different tasks, the tasks in students" textbook are not proper and task-based language teaching has a burden on teachers. As such, recommendation was proposed based on the findings to help teachers, teacher trainers and administer of TBLT. Accordingly, teachers need to acquire the knowledge of TBLT in relation to designing, planning, executing, and evaluating tasks based on the leaners" capacity and educational level. As evaluation of learners and large class size are the main challenges in the implementation of TBLT, alternatives methods are advisable to overcome the problems.
