Abstract

Despite Nigeria’s constitutional and educational policy provisions promoting the use of indigenous languages, implementation has historically fallen short due to various systemic, political, and logistical challenges. The new Nigerian language policy reimagines indigenous languages not just as cultural symbols but as tools for national transformation. This paper explores the transformative philosophy of the new policy, unpacks the challenges of the past, presents implementation efforts, and outlines strategies to foster sustainable and inclusive outcomes. Through digital innovation, grassroots mobilization, academic reform, and inter-agency collaboration, Nigeria can effectively reposition its linguistic diversity as a driver of national development.
